Arizona pools have a reputation for doing the same annoying thing over and over: the water tests fine, you add acid, the pH looks good for a few days, then it starts climbing again. By the time you check it the next week, it is back in the danger zone.

That is not bad luck. It is the desert.

In our climate, pH drift is one of the most predictable pool problems there is. Hot water, strong sunlight, hard fill water, evaporation, and aeration all push pH upward. If you use a salt system, spa spillover, waterfalls, or anything that splashes and churns, the drift gets even faster.

The fix is not to dump in more acid every time the number creeps up. The fix is to understand why Arizona pools climb in the first place and then make the water easier to manage.

What pH Is Actually Telling You

pH measures how acidic or basic your water is. For residential pools, the sweet spot is usually around 7.2 to 7.6. That range is comfortable for swimmers, friendly to equipment, and effective for chlorine.

  • Turn waterfalls off more often
  • Aim return eyeballs lower

  • Check whether a feature is running longer than it needs to

Less aeration usually means slower pH rise.

Use smaller, more regular acid doses

Big acid dumps create swings. Smaller adjustments are easier on the water and easier to track. In Arizona, the pools that stay most stable are usually the ones getting steady, measured corrections instead of occasional panic treatment.

If you are using muriatic acid, add it carefully and let circulation do the work. Never mix acid with chlorine or pour both into the same spot.

Test more often in hot weather

In spring and summer, weekly testing is a minimum for most pools. If your pool has a spa, salt cell, water feature, or heavy sunlight exposure, checking twice a week can save you from a bigger correction later.

When pH starts climbing faster than normal, that is usually the pool telling you something changed:

  • Water temperature increased
  • The pump schedule changed

  • Fill water has been added more often

Keep the water level where it belongs

That is why a pool with “good chlorine” can still feel off. If pH is climbing, chlorine does not stretch as far as it should.

A Simple Weekly Routine That Works

  1. Test chlorine, pH, and alkalinity at least weekly.
  2. Keep pH in the 7.2 to 7.6 range.
  3. Watch for a pattern, not just one bad reading.
  4. Adjust alkalinity if pH keeps rebounding too fast.

  6. Recheck after hot weather, storms, or heavy top-off water.
